1. Principal Job Roles:
Provides consecutive or simultaneous translation between languages.
Listens to complete statements in one language, translates to second, and translates responses from second into first language in consecutive interpreting.
Expresses either approximate or exact translation, depending on nature of occasion.
Renders oral translation of material at time it is being spoken, or provides written translation of correspondence or documents as required by communication needs.
Assists foreign nationals in conduct of daily business communications by providing translation during meetings, conferences, interviews, etc.
Receives briefing on subject discussed prior to interpreting session on occasion, but more frequently provides spontaneous translation as required by circumstances.
2. Required Knowledge:
Fluency in foreign language, including some knowledge of technical areas of clients serviced. In specialty language, the ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations.
Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals.
Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public.
Ability to apply commonsense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.
Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
